Winter decoration: the art of creating a warm atmosphere in a character home

Winter in a character house is a specific experience — the crackling fire, the smell of wax, the deep light of short days. Good winter decoration does not impose an artificial atmosphere but draws out the qualities already present in the place.

Warm textiles and layering

Winter decoration in a character interior begins with textiles: adding a thick wool throw to a sofa, replacing cotton cushion covers with linen or velvet ones, laying a natural wool rug on a stone or terracotta floor. These simple interventions, which can be reversed at the end of winter, instantly change the sensory quality of a room.

Seasonal scents

Scent is one of the most immediate triggers of atmosphere. Beeswax candles, a branch of dried lavender, a bowl of dried oranges and cinnamon, a wood fire: these olfactory elements contribute to an immediate sense of warmth that the eye alone cannot create.

Adjusting the light

In winter, when natural light is scarce, the quality of artificial lighting becomes crucial. Adding a lamp to a corner where there was none, switching to a warmer colour temperature, using candlelight in the evening: these adjustments completely transform the atmosphere of a room without any structural work.

Bringing in natural elements

Branches, pine cones, dried flowers, bunches of dried herbs, a bowl of walnuts or chestnuts: these natural elements brought into the interior create a connection with the season and the surrounding landscape. In a character house, they echo the materials of the building itself — stone, wood, earth — and contribute to the coherence of the whole.
