Remarkable 15th-century château in its green setting…
Set in a majestic park crossed by a river, with two accesses via automatic gates with video surveillance, sheltered from view, this 15th-century property is unique in the Vaucluse for its character and its period.
The 5.6 ha park imparts a most delightful art of living and stands out, among other things, for its centuries-old trees — some classified as “Remarkable Trees” — which form an island of greenery concealing all the buildings. It is planted with rare species, taken up by the Marquis de Ballancourt, owner of the estate in the 18th century. It is currently lit and benefits from automatic watering.
The château, on a human scale, is equally suited to a family property or a professional project, since it currently comprises two gîtes with an independent pool, a caretaker's house, seminar rooms, an artist's studio, a mill, and a former 500 m² silkworm farm (magnanerie) restored for hosting shows, seminars and weddings.
The château dates from the 15th century and the renovation work carried out by the Marquis de Ballancourt was completed in 1712.
On the site are a mill, the remains of a stone aqueduct, a great avenue of plane trees crossing the forest, a clearing, and the tomb of the Baron de Vatel de Lisle Roy.
Several elements of the property are in the process of being listed on the Supplementary Inventory of Historic Monuments (before the end of 2020), with the protection and financial advantages attached thereto.
The 17th-century chapel converted into a gîte
The estate was erected as a fief during the year 1674, in favor of the family that owned the place. In recognition of its ennoblement, the family had a chapel built to the glory of the Transfiguration.
The chapel has been rehabilitated and converted into a gîte on two levels. The dwelling has a living area of around 130 m². It comprises a living room opening onto the park's paths and the château's pool.
The 18th-century magnanerie
The arrival of the popes in Avignon at the beginning of the 14th century was accompanied by the introduction of mulberry cultivation in the region, and therefore of silkworm farms (magnaneries). Impressive in size and aesthetics, a testament to French artisanal heritage, this one is considered one of the most beautiful in France. The building rises over two levels for a total area of around 500 m². The interior has been entirely renovated. The beamwork is of cedar, with a ridge height of around 4.5 m.
The 15th-century mill and its annex
Holder of its water rights from the outset, it is on a single level, garden level. With an annex, its total surface area is more than 160 m². The grain mill once served to feed the inhabitants of the twenty-two farms located on the 260 ha that formerly made up the fief. The mill has preserved an English cast-iron machinery, the first of its kind imported to France in the 18th century and still in perfect condition today.
The sheepfold
Built of stone, it has two levels of around 50 m² each.
The pools
The 8 m × 15 m infinity pool was built in the château's park to the southwest. Heated, sheltered and lit, it is surrounded by a paved terrace edged with stone balusters on two sides. The second pool, 9 m × 5 m, is located in the garden of the independent dwelling, between terrace and lawn.
The pool house
With a surface area of around 26 m², it is equipped with toilets and a summer kitchen.
The technical rooms
A technical room of around 6 m² houses the pool's filtration system. In a second room of the same size are the borehole system and the watering system.
