Helsinki, a capital on a human scale – In autumn, during the “ruska”, in the last wild spaces of Europe
Land and water. White winters. Dazzling summers. In this country of 187,888 lakes and 180,000 islands, nature and way of life merge. A land of traditions and openness. A many-sided country. Beautiful. Fascinating.
While winter lasts twice as long in Finnish Lapland as in southern Europe, the very brief spring and summer are of intense brilliance. To experience the wonders of the Lapland autumn, the “ruska”, is an unforgettable experience of beauty.
After the last ice age, around 10,000 years ago, the various human migrations that reached these latitudes were made up of hunters and gatherers. They lived to the rhythm of the seasons, in these great expanses of forests, lakes and marshes.
Finland, for the uninitiated, is a labyrinth. To understand it, you must look at it from above: it is a veritable puzzle, with its 187,888 lakes, interspersed with bays and long morainic ridges.
Thanks to its isolated geographical location, Finland has something distant and exotic about it. Something fascinating, too.
During the summer, the sun stays suspended on the horizon — this is the season of the midnight sun.
In winter, the long polar nights and very short days cast a bluish light, especially in Lapland, beyond the Arctic Circle.
This region, peopled with legends, leads in the wake of one of the most famous figures in the world: the real Santa Claus.
Nature is of the utmost importance to the Finns, who love to flee the bustle of the city to retreat to a log cabin by a lake. But today their way of life is resolutely modern.
Often considered silent, the Finn reveals himself only once you know him better. Perhaps you too will feel the famous “sisu” — that kind of endurance and tenacity that so well characterizes their identity, forged by the hard struggles they have waged throughout their history. This “sisu” also explains the passionate relationship the country shows in the various sporting disciplines.
An exotic land, on the edge of Europe's last wild spaces. A fascinating, dazzling, human encounter. Lapland is the dream country of sports lovers, who can indulge in the joys of summer sports during the endless days — such as hikes on marked trails, mountain-bike rides to the summit of the Tunturi, canoe descents of the rapids, endless fishing sessions on lake and river, and why not a quad-bike ride, a new activity to discover in complete safety…
Lapland is also the country of the Lapp people, the “Sámi”, who have preserved all the cultural and historical riches of their ancestors.
The water of Finland's many lakes has a reputation for being very pure. You can swim in it without any problem, and even drink it. The Finns are very fond of their country's lakes.
Wild lands and reindeer herds, rustic cabins, the Finnish sauna and Lapp conviviality will not leave you cold.
